Airbag light still on after an accident?

You replaced the airbags, the seat belts and the bumper, but the airbag light is still on. This is one of the most common problems after a collision repair, and the cause is almost always the same: the airbag control module is storing crash data.

What is crash data?

When an airbag deploys, the airbag control module (also called SRS module, RCM on Ford or SDM on GM) writes a crash record to its memory. Once that record is stored, the module locks itself. It will keep the airbag light on and will not deploy again until the crash data is cleared or the module is replaced.

Why a scan tool doesn't fix it

Most scan tools can read and clear normal trouble codes, but crash data is stored in a protected area. Clearing codes doesn't remove it, so the light comes right back.

Your options

1. Buy a new module from the dealer

It works, but it's the most expensive option, and many new modules need dealer programming to your VIN.

2. Use a used module

A used module usually has its own VIN and sometimes its own crash data. It often doesn't work in your car without extra work.

3. Reset your original module

We clear the crash data from the module that came with your car. It keeps its part number and VIN, so it plugs back in with no programming. This is usually the fastest and cheapest fix.

What else must be replaced?

Resetting the module doesn't replace parts that were used in the crash. Deployed airbags, seat belt pretensioners and damaged impact sensors must be replaced for the system to work and for the light to go off.

How to send us your module

Disconnect the battery and wait a few minutes, remove the module, wrap it in bubble wrap and ship it with your eBay order number. We reset it and send it back with tracking.
